چکیده

—The real-time application is the main challenge that faces the wireless network. It must achieve the quality of service (QOS) requirements to success. IEEE802.11 standards use Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol and Distributed Coordinate Function (DCF) protocol in its Media Access Control (MAC) layer. EDCA protocol is used to overcome the drawback of supporting QOS in DCF protocol. The mechanism of EDCA protocol is based on dividing the data to four queues; voice, video, best effort and background. The queues have different priorities to access the medium. The voice queue has the highest priority and its data will serve firstly. Using the default parameter values for EDCA protocol will lead to increasing the collisions in the wireless network and decreasing the capacity. In this paper, the limitation of supporting QOS in EDCA protocol was presented by using OPNET simulation and mathematical model. The new mathematical model was designed by using Markov chain mechanism to evaluate the performance of the EDCA protocol under saturation and non-saturation conditions, aimed to separate between uplink and downlink throughput with different data types. Moreover, the new algorithm was proposed to enhance the capacity of the EDCA protocol and increase the number of the active voice users. Through our algorithm, the throughput was increased by 38.3% and the EDCA can support 14 voice users rather than 11 in the default EDCA protocol. The evaluation of our new algorithm was verified by using OPNET simulation and mathematical model.

and Non-Saturation Conditions

IEEE802.11 standards are the most popular techniques used in wireless network. Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocol and Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) protocol are used in these standards. EDCA protocol is issued to get over the defect in DCF protocol as it does not support Quality of Service (QoS). The mechanism of EDCA protocol is based on dividing the data into four q...

Revisiting the Markov Chain Model of IEEE 802.11E EDCA and Introducing the Virtual Collision Phenomenon

IEEE 802.11e specifies the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) for distributed access with traffic differentiation to a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). Traffic differentiation led to introducing several traffic queues within each station, thus introducing virtual collision. In this paper, we present a pattern based Markov chain model of EDCA including the virtual collision phenomenon...

A Markov Chain Approach to IEEE 802.11WLAN Performance Analysis

Wireless communication always attracts extensive research interest, as it is a core part of modern communication technology. During my PhD study, I have focused on two research areas of wireless communication: IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis, and wireless cooperative retransmission. The first part of this thesis focuses on IEEE 802.11 network performance analysis. Since IEEE 802.11 tec...

Performance analysis of IEEE 802.11e enhanced distributed channel access

In this research article, we have proposed an analytical model for the performance analysis of the enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) protocol of IEEE 802.11e wireless local area networks standard, using four-dimensional Markov chain. The contemporary EDCA models support only a small subset of EDCA features with limited accuracy. Our model accurately covers all salient features of stand...
